Kristi Yamaguchi tweeted to fellow figure skater Nancy Kerrigan to ‘Break a Leg!’ during her new stint on Dancing with the Stars.
"So excited for you @NancyAKerrigan ! Can't wait to see you grace that ballroom floor, break a leg! #DWTS," wrote Yamaguchi, 45.
Although it seemed Yamaguchi had the best intentions to wish Kerrigan luck, social media immediately blew up, with many Twitter users quick to point out the problematic phrasing of her tweet.
It seems the "break a leg" phrase reminded many fans of the Tonya Harding scandal, which rocked the figure skating world more than two decades ago.
In January 1994, Harding's ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly, hired a man to attack Kerrigan by hitting her in the knee with a baton to try to stop her from competing in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer.
Though the attacker didn't actually "break" Kerrigan's leg, she was injured. But she went on to win the silver medal.
As for the recent tweet, it doesn't appear that Kerrigan took the message for anything other than what it was: a good luck wish.
She replied in a tweet. "Thank you so much Kristi! I'm excited to get this started said for the advice you had for me. this its a blast!
