Body of Apache Junction man retrieved from Canyon Lake after drowning
CANYON LAKE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -
Divers from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) recovered the body of 28-year-old Tyron Turner late Sunday night. Turner drowned while trying to swim across Canyon Lake earlier that day.
Witness accounts said the Apache Junction resident tried to swim from the southern part of the lake to the northern side, but started struggling when he got about halfway through.
Turner tried to swim back toward the south side of the lake when, about 20 yards from the shoreline, he began yelling for help and struggling to stay above the water. Several witnesses on shore witnessed the struggle and called 911.
Maricopa County Sheriff deputies responded to the Boulder Recreation Area at Canyon Lake, but couldn’t find Turner by the time they arrived on the scene. Deputies began to look in the area using sonar scanning devices but were unsuccessful.
MCSO detectives and divers were called to the scene to assist in the recovery of the body. The MCSO Drive Team deployed a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in the area where the swimmer was last seen. About six hours later, Turner’s body was located in about nine feet of water.
Foul play is not suspected in the incident, but the investigation is under further review.
