Bicyclist hit by car, killed along I-17 frontage road

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

A bicyclist who was fighting for his or her life after being hit by a car along the northbound Interstate 17 frontage road.

The incident happened around 7:45 p.m. Sunday near the Glendale Avenue exit ramp.

Department of Public Safety officials say the car involved left the scene but was stopped nearby by police at Townley Drive along the frontage road.

Phoenix Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jonathan Howard said the bike rider was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. He or she later died.

No information about the victim was immediately available and it's not clear if the driver who hit him or her will face charges.

The area was closed during the on-scene portion of the investigation but has since reopened.
