PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

Authorities have identified the man who died after a head-on collision on 43rd Avenue south of Bethany Home Road Sunday afternoon.

Phoenix Police spokesman Sgt. Jonathan Howard said 22-year-old Deron James died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.

Investigators say James was a backseat passenger in a car that was hit by a car that failed to yield to traffic while turning onto 43rd Ave. from a side street.   James was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck, said Howard.

Howard said a 17-year-old woman was turning west to south from San Miguel Drive onto 43rd Ave. about 2:30 P.M. Sunday when her car was first hit by a northbound car in which James was riding in the backseat.

The 17-year-old's car then collided head-on with a pickup.

There were 5 others taken to local hospitals with injuries, said Howard.

Investigators don't believe impairment or speed were factors in the accident.  The investigation is continuing.

Police were already on scene of a  second deadly accident  on 43rd Avenue north of Bethany Home Road when this accident occurred.  The two incident are unrelated.
