PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -
Police say a 49-year-old woman has died and a 53-year-old man is in serious condition after both were shot in a potential domestic violence situation in Peoria Friday.
Peoria Police Department spokesman Officer Brandon Sheffert said officers were called to the Country Village apartments near 88th and Peoria avenues when the woman's 12-year-old daughter called 911 after finding her injured.
Sheffert said the girl heard a loud bang and then found her mother on the ground bleeding heavily from the ear. She was taken to a local hospital where she died.
Police on Saturday identified the woman as Tammy Mattison.
Officers on the scene soon found a second shooting victim, a man, located in a nearby apartment. He remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
Investigators believe the man, whom they are not identifying, shot Mattison and then went to his own apartment where he then shot himself.
The man is the 12-year-old girl's father but had been living in a separate apartment as they had been going through some relationship issues, said Sheffert.
The 12-year-old girl is being taken care of by extended family.
Peoria police had closed some roads in the area, but they have since been re-opened.
The investigation is still ongoing.
