Dave Owens, The Garden Guy: Successful Herb Garden

These cool nights and warm days make it just perfect to plant virtually anything in the garden and be successful. These are herbs, you want in your garden.

Artemisia, wards off a lot of insects including dogs and cats. Works out perfectly.

Always got to have a pollinator crop. This one I use called Alyssum and you can see these small flowers develop a lot different types of nectar and that nectar source goes to producing or creating a beneficial habitat for those beneficial insects so we don't have to spray pesticides out here.

Rue is another one for warding off cats. Some of your sages, now remember, when you're planting a lot of these different types of herbs you want to have well drained soil so something like a lava sand will go a long way to creating that well drained soil.

If you have trouble going to sleep, try Thyme. Thyme tea is one that works our fantastic. I drink it every night. Basil is another one, companion plants with virtually everting including tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. It has insect repelling qualities to it, along with getting rid of mosquitoes. Some curry, that works out well, and finally, one of the best herbs is Italian oregano. It will virtually take over a garden but if you like to cook with it. It's something every gardener should have here in the desert southwest.

Remember, well-drained soil and plant some of these herbs along with a pollinating crop and you're on your way to a successful herb garden.
