PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

More than two dozen people were left without a place to live after a fire ripped through their Phoenix apartment complex.

It happened at about 6:30 Tuesday evening in the area of 28th Drive and Cactus Road, just west of Interstate 17.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, the initial call indicated that people were trapped inside, but firefighters searched the building and found nobody.

Crews got a handle on the fire relatively quickly, but not before the damage was done.

The Greater Phoenix Chapter of the American Red Cross sent volunteers from its Disaster Action Team to help those displaced by the fire – 29 people -- with their immediate needs.

No injuries were reported.

Investigators have not determined how the fire started.
