A teen girl was taken to the hospital after police said she shot herself.

It happened near 63rd Avenue and Baseline Road around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to police, officers found her in the backyard with one round in the stomach from a small caliber handgun.

It's unclear if it was an accident or done on purpose.

She was alert and conscious when she went into surgery, police said.

Her mother and an older brother were home at the time of the shooting.

Police said an adult in the home owned the gun.
