Where rustic meets modern and each room is a work of art

In January's issue of Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine, you'll find one of Arizona's most unique and exciting homes, bringing the culture of Indonesia to the pines of Flagstaff. Homeowner and furniture designer Jason Scott created this 7,200-sq. foot modern mountain house with beams made of reclaimed Indonesian teak each telling a different story.  Soon after its completion last year, it won the Phoenix Home and Garden Masters of the Southwest Award.

About the House:
Nestled in the mountains of flagstaff sits this 7200-square foot masterpiece. This home is 20-year labor of love for homeowners Jason and Risti Scott. Perched in pine canyon this three-level house is surrounded by ponderosa pine.

The master suite... includes large slabs of teak suspended from a beam by metal straps... a carved stone tub is the focal point in the master bath.

Gourmet kitchen and adjacent dining room features a wood slab dining table inset with molten and polished aluminum. An expansive deck overlooks an impressive backyard.

Modern and Asian influences are evident thanks to exquisite reclaimed teak and other Indonesian woods, iron and native artifacts.

  •             his and her office space and additional bedrooms can be found upstairs.
  •             a media room, guest quarters and walk-out basement make up the downstairs.
  •             one of the unique features. a glass floor that showcases an intricate carving.
  •             angled rooflines and glass walls bring a modern flare.

Take a dip in a bathtub made from one giant boulder

Nothing says bringing the outside-in, more than a bathtub made entirely from one giant boulder. The rock was hand crafted and designed in Indonesia, and brought over to the United States by boat. It resides in Jason Scott's Flagstaff cabin home in Pine Canyon, as a reminder of the island he loves so much. Another striking element in this dream bathroom is a hand-carved stone wall which resides behind the tub. It was created by hand by a team of over 200 skilled indigenous craftsmen.

High altitude yoga takes yoga practice to new heights

In Flagstaff, one of Arizona's favorite tourist sites, there are outdoor activities everywhere, including yoga. At an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet, you can practice high altitude yoga here, the latest fad amongst yogis, but of course, you might want to prepare a little first. We learn the benefits of yoga practice in higher altitudes, and how to practice yogic breathing while visiting a lush mountain town.

Source: TheHealthsite.com
The fact that Yoga has caught the fancy of Westerners is old news, but the latest fad amongst yogis is practicing it at a high altitude. In the quest for the higher power that embodies the core concept of yoga, practitioners are heading towards the sky. Companies like Nepal-based Purna Yoga & Treks offer high-altitude retreats for yogis wanting to experience their passion close to its presumed place of origin.

Benefits of a high-altitude class
The idea of taking yoga to new heights is hardly new, for the ancient practice is said to have developed in the Himalayan Mountains. Clinical studies have observed the response to increased altitude among yoga practitioners, indicating that advanced breathing techniques might ease the adjustment for them relative to yoga laymen. Instructors say practitioners benefit from the thinner air, which makes the body work harder.

In an urban setting where people do not have the privilege of going and meditating on a mountain top every morning, such settings not just offer a view as spectacular as from a mountain top, but also a more relaxing environment, less noisy and more calm a rarity for city dwellers. This can also help lower stress levels leading to a healthy mind, body and soul.

The open environment further adds to the natural feel of the class which a studio class may not offer and fresh, pure air means more oxygen for your system. This is as close one can get to nature whilst in a city.

Flagstaff resident's backpacking trips inspire home design

Furniture designer and craftsman Jason Scott backpacked around the world and traveled from village to village, even sleeping in a hut for years, to finally find inspiration on the Indonesian island of Madura. It's a remote spot accessible only by ferry. This is where he now employs some 200 carpenters, carvers and finishers, and where the heart and soul of his business, Jason Scott Collections, really lives.

Located in Flagstaff, Arizona and crafted largely of the resources amassed from two decades of creating for the Jason Scott Collection, Jason's Indonesian warehouse held numerous massive teak beams, posts and iron --and a 200-person team engaged in the new project of building items for the home.

Soon the warehouse supplies were exhausted and Jason travelled from village to village in search of the right dimensions and quality to fit the intricate, highly-detailed creation of the home. After a year of committed searching, the needed supplies were at hand and construction could begin in earnest.

The story of Flagstaff House is an incredible 20-year journey of passion and determination. Combining old-world craftsmanship, a commitment to quality and unique composition--and an unwavering quest for exquisite detail-- Flagstaff house is truly like no other.

Making Paella with Proper Meats & Provisions

Chef Flip, making a popular Spanish dish called Paella, but we're doing it Criollo-style. Not only is Chef Flip behind two hot spots in Flagstaff, Criollo Latin Kitchen and Brix, but it was also a life-long dream of the acclaimed restaurateurs to open Meats + Provisions in Flagstaff as well. It's a one-of-a-kind community butcher shop and neighborhood eatery that showcases the Grand Canyon State's finest farm-raised meats, poultry and cured products.

An Arizona-Raised Meatery Showcasing the Grand Canyon State's finest farm-raised meats, poultry and cured products.

A life-long dream of the acclaimed restaurateurs behind Brix and Criollo Latin Kitchen (Flagstaff) and Proper (Tucson), Proper Meats + Provisions is a one-of-a-kind community butcher shop and neighborhood eatery that showcases the Grand Canyon State's finest farm- raised meats, poultry and cured products.

Our 1900's historic 1,600-square-foot neighborhood store, butchery and 10-seat eatery offer home cooks, diners and chefs an abundance of fresh, artisanal meats and charcuterie sourced sustainably from local farms, while offering Arizonans a wholesome perspective on the craft and art of whole-animal butchery.

As the first exclusively local, whole animal butcher shop in Arizona, Proper Meats + Provisions is a return to the artfulness of butchery, offering specialty cuts of meats and carefully curated products not commonly found on big-box grocery store shelves (although we'll stock the common cuts, too). All the meats we offer are humanely and sustainably raised, and can be traced directly back to the source in a throwback to the days when farmers and purveyors monitored every step in the farm-to-table process.

While offering the highest quality of humanely and sustainably raised meats is at the very heart of what we do here at Proper Meats + Provisions, our offerings of fresh, local fare extend far beyond the butcher block to include local cheeses, small plates, fresh-baked breads, house-made soups, sandwiches, as well as a curated menu of craft beers and Arizona wines.

Educating the public as to the benefits of sustainable farming and butchery is a primary focus of Proper Meats + Provisions, and we encourage the folks of Flagstaff to join us as we work toward a common goal of expanding Arizona's community of socially conscious farmers, butchers, chefs and consumers.
