AZ Consumer Fraud Week

In recognition of Arizona Consumer Protection Week, Attorney General Mark Brnovich released a list of the Top AZ Consumer Fraud Complaints received in 2016.  The Attorney General's Office received more than 15,000 consumer complaints and recovered more than $3.9 million dollars for Arizona consumers in 2016.

"Con-artists are constantly creating new schemes to steal money from hardworking Arizonans," said Attorney General Mark Brnovich. "Education is the key to protecting yourself and your loved ones."

Arizona Consumer Protection Week is held in conjunction with National Consumer Protection week, a nationwide campaign aimed at consumer protection and fighting fraud.
2016 Top AZ Consumer Fraud Complaints:
1.    Motor Vehicle Sales, Repairs, & Rentals
2.    Telemarketing Scams
3.    Mortgages and Real Estate Services
4.    Internet Service & Cell Phones
5.    Online Sales

Five Warning Signs of a Scam:

1. The Offer Seems Too Good to be True
If it seems too good to be true, it is. Examples include money left to you from an unknown relative or being awarded a grant you did not apply for. Be very suspicious of winning a large sweepstakes prize unless you can confirm its authenticity.

2. They Want Private Information
Anytime someone tries to get your bank account number, Social Security Number, or other sensitive information, you should automatically be on alert. Don't give out personal information.

3. They Ask You to Wire Money
STOP! It's a scam. Con-artists prefer untraceable payment methods like wire transfers.

4. Requests for Fees
Never pay fees or taxes in advance unless you are 100% certain it is not a scam. It is illegal for someone to require up-front payment before funding a loan or paying out a sweepstakes prize.

5. Pressure
Scammers will often put pressure on their victims and urge them to pay immediately or lose the opportunity.

Chicago Cubs Wives Build Greenhouse at Mesa Urban Garden Downtown, Mesa

Mesa Urban Garden, a popular event space and a source of locally grown food for families, food banks and nearby restaurants, has exceeded the expectations of its founders and the volunteers who run it. But as every gardener knows, there's always room for improvement.

On March 6, Cubs Wives will finish the assembly of a greenhouse with the financial support of the Cubs Foundation, completing a task on Mesa Urban Garden organizers' to-do list.

After nearly five years of operation, the garden is firmly rooted as a downtown Mesa community gathering place and a point of pride for revitalization of the Southside Heights neighborhood. The greenhouse adds another amenity to an urban garden that features 120 plots and event space for a variety of uses, such as art shows, weddings and yoga classes.

The frame of the greenhouse has been at the site for several months. But Mesa City Councilman Ryan Winkle, a founder of Mesa Urban Garden, said extra hands were needed to finish the greenhouse project, including installing shelves.

Cubs Wives volunteered to complete work on the greenhouse plant seed starter trays. Seedlings grown in the greenhouse will be transplanted to several plots that supply produce to local food banks, Winkle said.

Cooking mussels at home

Mussels look intimidating but Valley food blogger and chef Joanie Simon shows us they are one of the easiest things, especially when entertaining.

  •     Cooking mussels look intimidating, but they are one of the easiest things, especially when entertaining.
  •     Be sure to buy quality mussels so that they don't taste super fishy.
  •     To prep them, rinse them well in water and then remove the "beards".
  •     You also want to make sure to only cook the live ones.  How do you know they are still alive?  They will close their shell when you squeeze them.
  •     Once they're cooked, only eat the ones that opened, discard any that stayed closed.

Mussels in Thai Curry Broth

2 tablespoons peanut oil
1 Tbs. fresh ginger, minced
2 cloves fresh garlic, minced
1 serrano pepper, minced
3 tablespoons Thai green curry paste
¼ cup rice wine vinegar
can unsweetened coconut milk
1 tablespoons fish sauce (nam pla)
2 limes
2 1/2 pound mussels, debearded and scrubbed
¼ cup of fresh basil and cilantro chopped together

  • Heat a wok or large pot on the stove over medium high heat with the peanut oil, then add in ginger, garlic, and pepper and sauté until soft.
  • Then add in the curry paste and stir to combine with the vegetables.
  • Then add in the coconut milk, vinegar and fish sauce and simmer 10 minutes to allow the flavors to intensify.
  • Next, prepare your mussels and then add them to the simmering broth, stir and then cover with the pot's lid and steam 3 minutes or until they're all opened.
  • Move the mussels to a serving dish and garnish with fresh herbs and lime wedges.

Take advantage of artichokes while they're in season!

Artichokes are in season from March to May, so if you've never prepared them, now is the time!

  •     Artichokes are in season from March to May, so if you've never prepared them, now is the time!
  •     When you trim them, rub them with lemon to keep them from discoloring.
  •     The vary in size and depending on how big they are will dictate the cook time.
  •     I like to cook them in the pressure cooker and then finish them on the grill to get a nice smoky flavor.  If you don't have a pressure cooker, you can steam them and then finish on the grill.
  •     Be sure to remove the "choke" the fuzzy part.  I take it out after cooking because it's easier to remove then.

How to Cook Artichokes

2 large artichokes
2 lemons
1 tsp salt
1 cup water
olive oil
1 cup sour cream
3 Tbsp. Dijon

  • Start by trimming off the tips of the leaves.
  • Then, cut off the top and rub it with lemon juice.
  • Put them cut-side down in the pressure cooker, add a cup of water, a tablespoon of salt and then pressure cook on high for 7 to 10 minutes, depending on the size of the artichokes.
  • Don't have a pressure cooker, you can steam them for 25 to 35 minutes (again, depending on size) or boil them for about the same amount of time.
  • You'll know artichokes are done when the leaves easily pull away, but not fall apart.
  • Then slice them down the middle, starting from the stem since it's softer.  This will expose the beautiful interior of the artichokes.
  • From there, run a knife along the line right below where the fur or the "choke" is and remove that fuzzy center.
  • Rub the artichokes with olive oil and then toss them on the grill for 60 seconds to seal in a nice sear.  It's up to you if you want to keep them there longer to get even more char.
  • Combine the sour cream and Dijon for a dipping sauce and serve.

Queen of Clean Window Cleaning Hacks

This formula is for washing windows and using the hose to rinse them and not drying them.  I have found these types of formulas work quite well, but anytime you wash and don't dry windows, it won't be perfect.
1 gallon warm water
2 cups white vinegar
1 Tablespoon liquid dish soap
I suggest using a sponge mop or a microfiber mop on an extension pole to wash the windows.  Dip the mop/brush into the solution and wash the window well.  Immediately hose off the window, working from the top down.  It is important to not let the solution dry on the window so rinsing immediately will give you the best results.  Let window dry.  NOTE:  Do not do this when sun is hitting the window or they are hot.
2-gallon bucket of warm water
¼ cup cornstarch
½ cup white vinegar
Combine well to dissolve cornstarch.  Using a sponge (a natural sponge works best) wash window, do not rinse and buff dry with paper towels or microfiber cloth
There is NO water in this solution
1 pint of rubbing alcohol
2 Tablespoon ammonia
2 Tablespoons liquid dish soap.
Apply to window using a scrubbing sponge, rinse and buff.
This Is great for windshields too.
Moisten a bar of Lava™, Soap and rub a wet cloth across it.  Rub into stain, rinse and continue with your choice of window cleaning solution.  Buy LAVA where you buy hand or bath soap.
2 cups water
½ teaspoon liquid dish soap of liquid castile soap
Shake, spray and wipe
Simply spray and wipe with a lint-free rag, micro fiber cloth or paper towels.
Simply take a black board or white board eraser and erase the streaks away.
