EL MIRAGE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

A 7-year-old boy was taken to the hospital Friday afternoon after he was hit by a car in El Mirage.

The child was struck just after 3 p.m. as he was walking home from school.

Police say a white truck was driving southbound on Main Street just north of Windrose Drive, when the boy walked into the street in front of the truck.

Police tell us the boy was not in a crosswalk.

"The child was struck, fell down, and got back up. The driver exited the vehicle and assisted the child to the sidewalk and awaited for the fire department. The child was talking and alert," reads a statement from the El Mirage Police Department.

The boy was taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital for precautionary reasons.
