A suspect was killed but no police officers were hurt in an officer-involved shooting in Phoenix, police said.

It happened near 24th Street and Van Buren Street at the Sky Harbor Inn, which is an apartment complex.

Police said the suspect was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition, where he later died.

According to police, officers arrived at the complex around 4:30 p.m. to arrest the suspect for a probation violation. He was spotted up outside his room on the second-floor landing and officers surrounded the area.

The 27-year-old suspect was armed and police gave commands to drop the gun but he didn't comply, police said.

That's when one officer opened fire, hitting the suspect.

No officers were struck.

Witnesses say they heard between four and five gunshots.

The suspect and the officer who shot him have not been identified.

Van Buren Street is closed in both directions between 22nd and 24th streets.
