PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

Police are investigating the death of an elderly man who appeared to have been the victim of a hit-and-run driver early Monday morning.

That man has now been identified as 83-year-old Buenaventura Barraza-Maya.

It happened at 6 a.m. on West Denton Lane in the neighborhood northeast of 43rd Avenue and Camelback Road.

According to Sgt. Jonathan Howard of the Phoenix Police Department, officers responding to a report of an injured person found the victim lying in the roadway. He suffered "significant injuries."

“Investigators report that the man’s injuries are consistent with being struck by a vehicle, although they have not yet been able to locate any credible witnesses,” Howard said in an email to media outlets. “Any vehicle or driver involved did not remain at the scene.”

The victim was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Investigators say they have no additional suspect information at this time.
