PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

Phoenix police were looking for suspects after a man paying a debt was shot and wounded.

A companion was with the 42-year-old victim as they drove to an area near 4600 E. Pueblo around 1 a.m. They were going there to pay an outstanding debt, according to Phoenix Police Chief Jonathan Howard.

"The witness was waiting in the car when the victim returned being chased by two men and claiming he had been shot," Howard said.

The companion drove the victim to Tempe St. Luke's Hospital at 1500 S. Mill Ave.

The victim was taken to another hospital due to the severity of his condition, Howard said.

The man was reported to be in serious condition at last check.

No descriptions were available of the suspects, who ran off.
