A collision at Central Avenue and Encanto Boulevard early Saturday knocked out power and light rail traffic.

A pickup truck heading south on Central rear-ended another car at around 1:30 a.m., Phoenix Police Sgt. Jonathan Howard said.

The truck struck a power box and tree before crossing the roadway and striking a light rail pole, Howard said.

Two people were injured. The driver of the pickup and a passenger were taken to a local hospital. They are expected to be OK.

No one else was hurt.

Howard said officers suspect speed and impairment played roles in the crash.

As of around 7 a.m., the roadway was expected to remain closed for two or three more hours.

Valley Metro tweeted the light rail tracks reopened between McDowell and Thomas roads at around 10:30 a.m.
