The Higley Unified School District (HUSD)  is adding a new "gifted" preschool program.

"The program will be an opportunity for gifted children who are coming into pre-school with advanced academic qualities." said Kim Dobbs-Keran, gifted and talented education coordinator for HUSD.

The gifted students will be with like-minded peers so they can explore and discover new concepts and build relationships.

"Teachers will have the flexibility to follow the lead of the student and then wherever they're going, build on that opportunity," said Patti Gleason.

But at the same time, no one forgets that these gifted kids are still 4- and 5-year-olds.

"And if they need a nap they can take a nap, said Gleason.

"We know there is a need and we know parents need support as well and that will be an important component."

The gifted program isn't the only specialty offered to preschoolers.

"We have a Mandarin dual language program at Cooley Center and we have a Spanish dual language that will also be starting here," said Gleason.

And this program isn't just for children that live in the district.

"This program is for children in all of the neighboring districts and all of the communities around here," said Dodds-Keran.

Potential students are required to take an IQ test.

Ten children have already been accepted. The school is looking for 10 more.

The gifted program begins this July.
