YUCCA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

One person was killed and another suffered minor injuries when a box truck rear-ended a semi on Interstate 40 early Friday morning.

It happened shortly before 2:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes about 23 miles east of the Arizona-California border. Milepost 23 is near Yucca, which is about 25 minutes southwest of Kingman in Mohave County.

According to Department of Public Safety Trooper Kameron Lee, the driver of the tractor-trailer called to report that he had been rear-ended.

Lee said a box truck hit the semi and “became lodged under the trailer.”

The driver of the box truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.

The wreck blocked the roadway, forcing the closure of eastbound I-40 for a time. Heavy-duty tow trucks were called out to remove the vehicles.

The westbound lanes were not affected by the crash and subsequent cleanup operation and one of the eastbound lanes has since reopened. The Arizona Department of Transportation tweeted that the road would be narrowed to one lane for a bit longer.

The roadway was completely open and the backup had cleared by shortly after 7:30 a.m., a little more than five hours after the crash.

I-40 in Arizona is about 360 miles long and runs across the state from California on the west to Mexico on the east. The crossing from California into Arizona is a bridge across the Colorado River in Topock, which is a little less than four hours northwest of Phoenix and about three hours southwest of Flagstaff.
