PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, Arizona ranks fourth in the nation for tailgate thefts while Texas takes first place.

Phoenix police say it really comes down to a crime of opportunity.

A lot of pickup truck owners don't properly secure their tailgate with an anti-theft system or locks. If the tailgate is completely unprotected, it can take a thief less than a minute to take it off a truck and take off.

On Tuesday around 2:30 in the afternoon, a man was spotted by security cameras outside a company called Tel Tech Networks, Inc. One of their trucks was parked on a side street but in plain view of the company's cameras. The thief pulls up and gets out and steals a tailgate off one of their trucks.

Daniel Frakes with the Tel Tech says he was shocked to see how brazen the thief was.

"He's taking his time. He's got no worries in the world. He's happy, go lucky," Frakes said.

Phoenix police say the man in the video is tied to another tailgate theft on Feb. 14.

Police say tailgate theft is for a number of reasons. Thieves can sell them for scrap metal or sell them on online.
