A Florida-based developer has applied for zoning changes in Casa Grande to make way for a theme park comparable to Disney World. The recreation and amusement park elements would be part of a larger, 1,500-acre project where Interstate 10 meets with Interstate 8.
According to documents submitted to the City of Casa Grande, phase one of Dreamport Villages will include “an extreme sports park, the wild animal and rides park, theme based water park, hotels, entertainment and meeting facility, welcome center, RV park, restaurants, retail shops and offices along with other coordinated amenities around a lake and canal system.”
Phase One alone is expected to create more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Out-of-towners seemed to love the idea of a destination resort in Arizona, but those living near the proposed project are divided on the issue. Some residents say they don't want to deal with extra noise and traffic while others expect it to raise their property values.
Some of the homeowners plan to attend the zoning hearing and fight the requested zoning changes.
The Block Sports Company has applied for zoning changes to allow for a recreation/amusement park. A public hearing will be held 6 p.m. on March 2 at City Hall Council Chambers, 510 E. Florence Blvd in Casa Grande. That meeting will be followed by a March 20 City Council hearing.
