GILBERT, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -
A Valley military mother is furious after someone shredded her American flag hanging in front of her Gilbert home.
Mary Eklund and her husband noticed the desecration after they returned from dinner Tuesday night.
“He said, 'Look what somebody did to the flag' and I just went berserk,” she said.
The flag is an important symbol for Eklund, who has 16 family members that have served the country.
“My whole family has always had a lot of respect for the military, putting a flag up represents that,” said Eklund.
Although the Gilbert mother doesn’t know who shredded the flag for sure, she suspects an aggressive solicitor that came by earlier that day. He didn’t take rejection well.
“He literally banged on the door. We still didn’t answer and he left,” said Eklund.
Neighbors are upset about the vandalism too.
“I tear up for the national anthem. I tear up when I say the Pledge of Allegiance at my daughter’s basketball games. It’s a symbol of freedom and hope,” said Cindy Savage, who lives nearby.
Like the generations of her family who didn’t back down from adversity, Eklund says she won’t either. The plan is to put up another flag as soon as possible.
“This flag represents the United States of America and the only way we became the United States of America was people fighting for us. If they think for a minute that’s going to keep me from hanging the flag out, they’re nuts,” said Eklund.
The mother plans to put the destroyed American flag to good use by incorporating it into a special quilt to keep honoring the people that serve.
“Every one of these strands is like one of our people that’s fighting for our country and never making it home,” she said.
