The driver of a Chevrolet Tahoe was killed when he slammed into a parked flatbed trailer at 51st Avenue and Jefferson Street Wednesday morning.

Jefferson Street is south of Van Buren Street, which is south of Interstate 10 (Papago Freeway).

It happened shortly before 6 a.m.

“There is extensive damage to the SUV and Fire is working to check the status of the occupant,” Sgt. Vince Lewis of the Phoenix Police Department said.

First responders pronounced that driver dead at the scene, which is in an industrial area, and were working to extricate the body.

According to police, the driver was westbound on Jefferson Street "behind a slower moving tractor trailer." As he tried to pass that semi, he plowed into the front of the flatbed, which was parked on the side on the curb by itself, not hitched to a truck.

Video from the scene showed the SUV wedged under the flatbed; the top of the driver's side appeared to have been sheared off.

At this point, police are not sure if the driver did not make it around the semi in time to avoid the flatbed or if he simply did not see it because it was so dark in the area.

“Traffic restrictions will be in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area and choose an alternate route,” he continued.
