GLENDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Police are trying to determine if speed and alcohol were factors in a crash that put one man in the hospital.

It happened shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday at Glendale Avenue and New River Road, which is west of the New River Trail.

Sgt. Scott Waite of the Glendale Police Department said a car plowed into the back of a semi as the rig turned right from northbound New River Road onto East Glendale Avenue. The car then rolled.

The adult male who was behind the wheel of the car had to be extricated; he suffered life-threatening injuries. The truck driver was not hurt.

Police have not identified either driver.

Initial indications are that speed and impairment on the part of the driver of the car might have contributed to the crash.

Glendale Avenue was closed between Glen Harbor Boulevard (103rd Avenue) and 99th Avenue to allow police to conduct the on-scene portion of their investigation. The Loop 101 exit at Glendale Avenue was closed, as well.

By 5 a.m., police were removing the barricades and preparing to reopen the area.
