A Buckeye teacher is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old foreign exchange student.

Goodyear police arrested Joshua Schroder, 36, on Sunday. He was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on nine counts of sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Schroder is a teacher at Rainbow Valley Elementary School in the Liberty School District. Police said he is also the coordinator of a foreign exchange student program.

According to court documents, the 17-year-old girl is from Sweden.

The girl's host mother told police that there were over 600 text messages sent between the teen and the suspect over the last month, according to the court paperwork.

The girl's mother came to the Valley from Sweden on Sunday morning and she and the host mother confronted the teen about her relationship with Schroder, court documents stated. The teen reportedly disclosed that their relationship had turned sexual.

Schroder has been a fourth-grade teacher for over 10 years, according to the superintendent.
