MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

A 7-year-old boy was critically injured when he was hit by a vehicle in Mesa.

Mesa police said the female driver took off after the accident but returned to the scene shortly afterward.

Maria De Jesus Cabrera Davila, 23, is facing a charge of failure to remain at the scene of a serious injury collision. That is a class 3 felony.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning at approximately 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of 56th Street and Broadway Road

Davila told police she was aware that she hit the child and fled the scene.

After speaking to a family member, Davila was returning to the scene when she was contacted by police and detained.

Impairment does not appear to be a factor in this case, according to detectives.

Police said Davila does not have driver's license. She does, however, have a learner's permit for driving.

According to a police report, the victim has life-threatening injuries and is currently on life support.
