SCOTTSDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Crews rescued an injured man from a trench in northeast Scottsdale on Tuesday afternoon.

Fire crews from Phoenix and Scottsdale responded to a confined space rescue near 122nd Street and Rio Verde Drive at about 1:30 p.m.

Scottsdale Fire Department Division Chief John Whitney said the man fell 40 feet into a hole. He had been climbing out of the 15-foot-by-15-foot steel-reinforced hole, when lost his footing on a ladder and fell.

Technical rescue crews extended a ladder with pulleys and ropes over the trench and hoisted him out in a basket.

The man in his 30s was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.

He suffered a broken left leg and ankle. He is reportedly in stable condition.
