MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Mesa police have identified the victim in a fatal stabbing.

Officers responded to a stabbing in the area of McKellips Road and Country Club Drive at around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday and found a man dead at the scene, according to Mesa Police Detective Steve Berry.

The victim has been identified as Byron Layton, 32.

“We don’t believe this is some sort of random event,” Berry said early in the investigation. “We believe we may have some persons of interest we’re looking at so we don’t want to give out any of those names at this point."

Berry added officers don't think there is any potential violence to the rest of the community.

A number of officers were processing the scene, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

A tow truck driver hauled a dark-colored minivan away. Berry did not elaborate on its connection to the crime.

Police said they have identified all of the individuals involved but did not release any other names.
