The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a marijuana grow operation was discovered following an early morning house fire in New River.

MCSO received a 911 call from a person reporting that his neighbor's house was on fire at about 4:40 a.m. Monday, according to Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez.

Deputies arrived and found that the sole occupant and two dogs had gotten out of the house located near Desert Hills Drive and 10th Street. The man said he was sleeping at the time of the fire and was house sitting while the homeowner was out of state.

Enriquez said the fire appears to have started in the garage and continued into a portion of the house. Firefighters put out the fire.

Enriquez said Daisy Mountain fire investigators went to the scene and discovered a large amount of marijuana in plain view inside the home. A search warrant was obtained and investigators found a structure on the property that contained a marijuana grow.

Enriquez said it appears there may have been hash oil equipment in the garage.

MCSO detectives will continue to investigate.
