DPS investigating deadly officer-involved shooting in Apache Junction

APACHE COUNTY, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

The Department of Public Safety is investigating a deadly shooting that began with a reported domestic violation situation and involved an Apache Junction police officer.

It happened just after midnight on Saturday, Jan. 28, at a home near Superstition Boulevard and Ironwood Drive.

According to the Apache Junction Police Department, officers responded to a domestic violence call and asked the occupant to come out of the house. They were met by a man holding a shotgun.

The man pointed the weapon at the officer, who then shot and killed the suspect, according to Apache Junction Police Chief Tom Kelly.

CPR was started at the scene and the man was transported to an area hospital where he later died. He has been identified as Bradley J. Szakacs, 44.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol.
