PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

The City of Phoenix is giving its residents more incentives to recycle and reduce the amount of trash.

The city said it has partnered with Recyclebank to create a new rewards program that educates and encourages Phoenicians to reuse or recycle materials.

City officials, including Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, joined Recyclebanks' CEO at the Arizona Science Center on Tuesday afternoon to explain how the program works.

Participants of the program go to recyclebank.com to sign up and activate their account. The website has articles about waste management and recycling and tips on how to go green. There are also videos, craft ideas on using recyclable materials and opportunities to enroll in any of Phoenix solid waste programs. Participants can complete activities to earn points.

The points are then redeemed for savings at local businesses and national chains, such as Bunky Boutique, AMC Theatres and Target, the city said.

"It's more important than ever that we conserve, recycle and reduce on our environment and this planet. With your help, we'll get Phoenix forward and I can't wait to get started," Stanton said.

There's also a mobile Recyclebank app that people can download for free.

Stanton said he wants Phoenix to have zero waste by 2050.
