PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

A woman was shot and killed as she loaded her two children into a car at a Phoenix apartment complex early Tuesday morning.

Officers said someone walked up and shot the 35-year-old woman just before 6 a.m. in the parking lot at 16001 N. 25th St.

The victim suffered multiple gunshots wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Phoenix Police Sgt. Vince Lewis said.

"(I) believe this was at a relatively close range," Lewis said.

Her name was not released.

The children were not injured.

"It’s shocking not only for the family but small children," Lewis said. "(For) neighbors it’s a jarring experience."

One resident, Patricia, who asked her last name not be used, has lived at the complex for four years.

"I used to live in an apartment above her," she said. "I just know she’s a quiet, dedicated mother who kept to herself.”

Officers cordoned off the entire length of the parking lot. Detectives and crime scene personnel were trying to locate the suspect
