A community of artists in Scottsdale is coming together Saturday to display, sell and auction off their art, all for a good cause.

The 9th annual Artists of Scottsdale Ranch Art show and sale will get underway this weekend, complete with an art display, a sale, and a silent auction. The event will benefit the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center at Shea Medical Center, Honor Health.

The show itself is free. But each artist participating will donate one or more items to be auctioned off to benefit the cancer center.

The "Artists of Scottsdale Ranch" is a local group made up of talented, regionally and internationally recognized artists that live in and around Scottsdale Ranch, a planned community located in north Scottsdale.

While the artists all work independently, they come together annually to display and sell their artistic endeavors in their home community. Each year on the last Saturday in January, the artists host an art show, sale and silent auction.

This year, dozens of artists will create the showcase, which will feature watercolors, original oils, keepsake bouquets, charcoal drawings and oil paintings.

You’ll also find sculptures, jewelry, stained glass and some amazing wild animal photography.
There's something for everyone, and you can browse through the works of this year's participating artists online

For example, artist Sheila Schneider creates unique and colorful pastels and pieces of jewelry. Artist Kate Secrest crafts garden art from reclaimed copper and organic cactus. And Sharon Martin creates "loose figure sculptures" which celebrate the female figure.

But this is more than an art show filled with unique and special pieces. The show’s ties to the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center make up part of the story.
It’s been said that sooner or later cancer touches everyone, at least to some degree. And that’s the case with many of the displaying artists, beginning with the founding artist, Sharon Martin, a cancer survivor whose diagnosis coincided with the 2009 inaugural show.

“We aren’t labeling this a charity event,” says Martin, whose sculpture depicting a post-treatment female torso is displayed in the lobby of the Piper Center, the result of a donation from a local benefactor.  “Art is an expression of life, and when we share ours, we are connecting with others in that regard.  We provide an opportunity to view and purchase fine art, even world class art, at far below gallery prices."

The Art Show & Sale takes place Saturday, January 28, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine, at the Scottsdale Ranch Community Center. That’s located at 10585 N 100th Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85258.  (The southeast corner of 100th Street and Shea.)

Refreshments will be available.  Staff from VGPCC will be on site to answer questions and explain the center’s programs.
