PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

One man is in the hospital and three people are in custody after an early morning shooting stemming from a possible drug deal.

It happened at about 2 a.m. Thursday in the neighborhood of 30th Avenue and Matthew Drive, which is southwest of 27th Avenue and Deer Valley Road.

It’s still early in the investigation, but it’s believed that the victim was talking to some people in a car when the driver hit the gas and tried to leave.

The victim jumped onto the driver’s side door and clung to the moving car for about 200 feet. That’s when somebody inside the vehicle shot him.

The victim collapsed in the street. He was in very serious condition when he was taken to the hospital.

According to Sgt. Vince Lewis of the Phoenix Police Department, the victim "told police he was shot while attempting to purchase drugs from someone in a vehicle."

Officers located the three suspects' vehicle heading south on Interstate 17. All three people were taken into custody for questioning without incident.

Police have not released the name of the victim, nor have they said anything about how he and the suspects might have been connected.
