Sen. Jeff Flake spoke about President Trump's recent immigration proposals and doesn't believe a border wall will get done or that Mexico will pay for it.

"Mexico says no," Flake said on Wednesday at Phoenix Sky Harbor. "None of us (Congress) think that's going to happen."

Flake said the Department of Homeland Security doesn't have enough money in its budget for a border wall so it would have to come from somewhere else.

"I think Congress is going to be hard pressed to cough up whatever, 10 or 12 or $15 billion that has been estimated for a wall across the border given the other priorities that we have," Flake said.

Despite the questions about the border wall, there are immigration policies that Trump proposed that Flake agrees with, like the crackdown on so-called “catch-and-release” deportations and so-called sanctuary cities.

Sen. Flake said while he doesn’t support Trump’s wall vision, he does believe the U.S. needs better barriers on its border with Mexico.

“That’s not the best use of money. The best use of money would be for bed space for detentions, for surveillance, for drones, for cameras, for stations, for operating bases, for border patrol but certainly not to put a wall everywhere,” Flake said.

Flake also slammed Trump’s proposal of stopping the flow of all refugees to the U.S. and indefinitely banning those fleeing war-torn Syria.

“I would have a problem with a blanket denial,” Flake said. “I hope we can continue to welcome refugees.”
