SPOKANE, Wash. (MEREDITH) -- A Spokane police officer is being hailed a hero after pulling a woman from a burning car Friday night.

Dash cam video shows officer Tim Schwering smashing out a car window with his baton, as he frantically tries to rescue a woman trapped inside.

Kimberly Novak said her car suddenly broke down after she drove over frozen slush, in an interview with KHQ-TV. Moments after the engine shut off, flames started shooting from under the hood of the car.

Spokane police said in a press release that Novak tried to kick out the window herself, but couldn't.

With the help of a neighbor, the officer was able to pull her to safety.

Novak and Schwering were both treated at the hospital for minor complications, but are doing fine.

Police said it's unclear what started the fire.
