PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

A Phoenix woman who pleaded guilty to two charges of child abuse for failing to feed her 9-month-old son for three weeks has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and lifetime supervised probation upon release.

Judge Sherry Stephens sentenced Veronica Marie Diaz, 27, after she entered her plea Thursday, saying she had given up on her son.

Diaz and her boyfriend, Ryan Adam Morris, 32, who is the father of the infant, said they failed to feed the child for three months after they ran out of baby formula.

Court records said Morris brought the unresponsive, severely underweight infant to a Phoenix hospital in March 2014, where the medical staff weighed the child in at 7 pounds, less than half the normal weight for a child his age, and detected failing kidneys.

According to Phoenix police, the couple fed the child one bottle of water a day and milk at night for 18 days.

Diaz has four other daughters and claimed she received no financial support from her family, according to court documents. Her boyfriend said he could not provide food for the child because he needed to pay bills, according to court records. However, police said Morris bought tobacco products and the couple bought soda and food for themselves and the other children during the 18-day period the child was starving.

Morris also said Diaz received a Social Security check each month. He is also facing charges.

Diaz's four other children were taken into custody after her arrest.
