Standoff ends in Ahwatukee with suspect in custody

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -

A standoff with a possibly violent suspect who had a gun ended with the suspect in custody on Wednesday night, police said.

The standoff was near 15th Avenue and Chandler Boulevard.

According to police, there was fugitive detail who talked to the suspect, later identified as Matthew Sbarbaro, on Wednesday afternoon. He then ran into his house and barricaded himself, police said.

Police said Sbarbaro was seen holding a firearm while inside the house.

Phoenix police helped out Tempe police with the situation.

Some neighbors were temporarily evacuated for their safety but are back inside their homes, police said.

There are no reports of injuries and the scene was contained, according to police.

After about five hours, Sbarbaro was taken into custody. Police didn't say how.
