TEMPE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

A suspect has been arrested in killing of Mesa High School teacher. Caleb Bartels has been taken into custody in California.

He's accused of shooting and killing a Mesa High School teacher in his backyard.

Officers had been looking for 27-year-old Caleb Bartels for days. Police released an updated photo of Bartels on Tuesday night.

The shooting happened around 4 a.m. last Sunday in the area of Mill Avenue and Baseline Road. It's unclear what led up to the shooting.

The victim was identified as 26-year-old Ryne Zahner.

He was a math teacher at Mesa High School. He was a graduate of Skyline High School and Arizona State University, according to Mesa Public Schools spokeswoman Helen Hollands.

"The Zahner family is part of the Mesa Public Schools community and we send our thoughts and condolences to them during this difficult time," Hollands said in a statement.

Hundreds of Mesa High students wore purple on Tuesday, the school's color, in honor of Zahner.

Additional counselors were at Mesa High School on Tuesday to provide support to students and staff.

According to Tempe police spokeswoman Detective Lily Duran, Bartels has a criminal history including assault, burglary and disorderly conduct.
