MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Officers said they were forced to open fire on a man trying to get away in Phoenix.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. Monday in the area of 35th Avenue and Tangerine Lane, which is south of Dunlap Avenue.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition, firefighters said. He later died.

Police said no officers were hurt in the incident.

It all started when police stopped an SUV for a traffic violation. According to Sgt. Vince Lewis with the Phoenix Police Department, the passenger had a felony warrant and was taken into custody.

Police searched the SUV and found a shotgun, according to Lewis.

The driver, who was a registered sex offender, then ran off and officers ran after him, Lewis said.

During the chase, Lewis said the suspect concealed his hands and made threats to the officers, saying he had a gun and was going to shoot the officers.

The suspect then ran past another officer, who was part of a different investigation.

"Upon passing that officer, the subject spun around to face, to confront the officers who were pursuing them. The officers, the two officers fired their service weapons, striking the subject," Lewis said.

He didn't say if a weapon was found on the suspect.

Police said the suspect was a 38-year-old man. He has not been identified.

A passenger in the back seat was detained as part of the investigation.
