The Wildlife World Zoo: Horseshoe Crab

Horseshoe Crab Facts:

  • Horseshoe crabs are not true crabs at all.
  • Horseshoe crabs are more closely related to arachnids (a group that includes spiders and scorpions) than to crustaceans (a group that includes true crabs, lobsters, and shrimp).
  • They look like a Spider but they only have 5 pairs of legs instead of 8.
  • Horseshoe crabs are often called "living fossils" because fossils date back almost 450 million years--that's 200 million years before dinosaurs existed!!!!
  • The entire body is covered with a type of armor that offers them protection.
  • They have gills that allow them to swim.
  • Their tails are used primarily to flip themselves upright if they are accidentally overturned.
  • Horseshoe crab larvae emerge from their nests several weeks after the eggs are laid.
  • Juvenile horseshoe crabs resemble adults except that their tails are proportionally smaller. The young and adult horseshoe crabs
  • Feed on various invertebrates.
  • They are about the size of the average adult man hand.
  • The females are larger than the males.
  • The overall size though will vary based on their location, diet, and the specific species.
  • They live primarily in and around shallow ocean waters on soft sandy or muddy bottoms.
  • They occasionally come onto shore to mate.
  • In recent years, a decline in the population has occurred as a consequence of coastal habitat destruction in Japan and overharvesting along the east coast of North America.
  • Their blood is blue in color.
  • Unlike vertebrates, horseshoe crabs do not have hemoglobin in their blood.
  • Because of the copper present in their blood it is blue.

The Wildlife World Zoo is located at 16501 W. Northern Ave. in Litchfield Park.
