MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

A crime was caught on camera in an Ahwatukee neighborhood. Two men broke into a garage and stole $10,000 worth of the family's belongings.

Nicolas McDowell moved into his home less than two months ago. He thought it was safe until late Sunday night.

"We went to bed about 10 or so. I never heard anything. So at 5:30 when I got up to go to work I looked out and I noticed the garage door was open" said McDowell.

McDowell’s garage door was open thanks to two thieves who hit in the middle of the night.

"They took everything they could get their hands on that was all right at the front of my garage. I had tools. I had boxes filled with sentimental stuff from my childhood and my mom. I had camping gear, my Christmas decor," said McDowell.

"They were at the house approximately 6 minutes and took off the way they came," said Jim Pelmer, who lives next door to McDowell.

It's was McDowell’s next door neighbor whose driveway the thieves parked in and his cameras that caught the theft.

"This was like a punch in the gut to see this happen to you neighbor," said Pelmer.

"I was angry. I was mad. There's a lot of bad people out here, unfortunately," said McDowell.

But fortunately for McDowell, his neighbor had the security system and it was all captured on camera.

" I love the guy. I can’t thank him enough," said McDowell.

"With so many valuable things being stolen, it's good to be able to have something to give to police hopefully to get these guys put behind bars," said Pelmer.
