AVONDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

In an Avondale neighborhood, there is one man who takes Christmas decorating to the next level and it's not sitting well with his HOA.

For the past 8 years, Ralph Turkenopf has created an epic Christmas display on his front lawn.

It's a tradition that he loves to do but setting up takes a lot of time and he usually begins on Nov. 1 to get it all done.

However, his HOA set up new rules that say he will have to wait until late November to set up anything on his front lawn.

"I need to start on Nov. 1 in order to finish in time for Christmas," Turkenopf said.

He has filed appeals with the HOA and the board agreed that he could put his lights up but that he couldn't do anything on the lawn until later in the month.

Turkenopf says he doesn't understand the change.

He even went around the neighborhood and collected 21 signatures from his neighbors.

Jeff Howard lives down the street and loves Turkenopf's yearly display.

"I have grandkids and they love to go down there and check it out," Howard said.

Turkenopf does have a hearing set up with his HOA later in October and hopes the board will allow him to begin his set up earlier.

We reached out to the HOA but would not comment on the issue because of privacy issues.
