Meatless Monday begins today

It's Meatless Monday! It's a day all "health" breaks loose! This is not a new idea, in fact it's been a global movement for years, but starting today at Salt & Lime Modern Mexican Grill, they're going meatless, and it's thanks to local entrepreneur Mary Beth York....this is her brainchild, and she's holding a launch party at Salt & Lime today that you can attend, with a portion of the day's proceeds going to animal charities. Salt & Lime will offer specials for both lunch and dinner to include Avocado Tacos, quinoa salad with Mexican rice and beans, kale and mango salad, vegetarian fajita's and Calabaza and Hongo Tacos and more. Mary Beth's hope is that other local restaurants will follow suit, so more people can opt out of meat just one day per week, to make an impact on their health and environment.

According to MeatlessMonday.com, "going meatless once a week may reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. It can also help reduce our carbon footprint and save precious resources like fossil fuels and fresh water."

Mutt Match

Be sure your new pet correlates with the ages of those in the household. A good rule of thumb: the new pet should fit the current physical capabilities of the caretakers with a perspective for what the next 10-15 years will bring.

It is not advised to bring a pet five months or younger, or toy-sized, into a home with young children. As young pets like to teethe and play, a young child may risk being bitten by a playful pet or may accidentally injure a toy-sized pet. A better choice for a household with young children is a medium-to-large sized pet over five months of age.

If there are elderly members in a household, a strong vigorous adolescent pet is not advised. Large breeds also demand more physical upkeep, something that an older person may no longer be fit for.

Additional tips to consider:

A Gift for the Whole Family: Do some research and poll each family member to find out what they are looking for in a new pet so that the pet you choose aligns with the circumstances of the household.
