Rescued Canadian Caimans

It was one of the largest international rescues of reptiles, and it was all thanks to the Scottsdale-based Phoenix Herpetological Society (PHS). Twenty-five common caimans that were at risk of being euthanized at a zoo in Ontario, Canada, are now calling the U.S. home. The reptiles, including the largest known common caiman in captivity, which weighs about 300 pounds, were driven over and moved in yesterday. Twelve of the animals, including the largest caiman, will stay in Scottsdale at the PHS sanctuary, while the rest will continue on to their final destination in South Carolina.

Due to the harsh Canadian winters, the caimans were housed indoors, but they had outgrown their enclosures at the Ontario zoo. Because of its vast experience with large reptiles and capability to safely transport these animals, Phoenix Herpetological Society coordinated the rescue. Just the permitting process, to make the move possible, took over a year to complete. PHS has the second-largest collection of crocodilians (which includes crocodiles, alligators and caimans) in the United States, with 21 of the world's 24 species in residence. Celebrate National Dog Day!

Aug 26th is National Dog Day! It's a day to encourage dog ownership of all breeds, and embrace the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and "abuse-free life." Lost our Home Pet Foundation, a no-kill shelter in Tempe, can help do that. Plus, they offer a pretty neat enrichment program for animals at the shelter. For instance, when it's too hot outside, they get to run on the treadmill indoors. They also have a stocked freezer with peanut butter Kong toys for the dogs during the hot summer months. Volunteers also work with the dogs on puzzles - another activity to stimulate their mind. The dogs here also have an opportunity for a weekend getaway - they can go home with foster families to escape the shelter for a few days. For more info: www.LostOurHome.org

Jeff Flake Cooking: Biscuits & Gravy Recipe

Gravy:

Take 1/2 lb. sausage and eight strips of bacon. Cut bacon into small pieces

Brown bacon and sausage in large cooking pot.  Don't remove grease (unless you're one of them vegan Democrats)

Lower heat and add 1/2 cup flour, stirring contents until flour sticks to bacon and sausage pieces

Add four cups of milk while increasing heat, making sure to stir frequently, scraping the bottom of the pot.  Add salt and generous amounts of pepper as gravy thickens

Biscuits:

For biscuits, just use a Bisquick or Krusteaz recipe (or heaven forbid one of those lame biscuit tubes at the store) that will yield ten or so.  Be sure to cook biscuits while the gravy is made so that both can be served piping hot

Enjoy!

How one man used Oprah to get through pain

He can be summed up as a Survivor. James Mercer says he grew up thinking he was a 'mistake.' He says his father was an alcoholic and homophobic, and denied him as his son. As a child, James channeled his hurt and anger into letters he wrote to Oprah Winfrey. As an adult, he channeled his experience into a new book called "Secrets and Shame-Dear Oprah Diaries." This book tells the journey of an abused teen, and how strength and determination can win. James started a non-profit in Texas called www.LonestarSocialServices.com to help other teens in similar situations. He is currently on a nation-wide book tour, he is a father of three, a child and family advocate, LGBT supporter, and dedicates himself to finding forever homes for foster kids.
