MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Phoenix police continue to hunt for a serial killer in the Valley and are hoping to find the suspect's car, which has proven to be a challenge.

Through this investigation, which began back in March, police have collected a few pieces of evidence including shell casings, a sketch and a description of one of the cars used. However, that description is somewhat vague with detectives saying it's a late 90s or early 2000s black BMW 5 series.

The car was used in the latest shooting on July 11, police said. One of the victims said he stopped at a stop sign at 30th and Sheridan streets. He says the driver of a black BMW pulled alongside him and opened fire on his car. No one was hit.

Since police announced they were searching for a car with that description, the public has responded with a ton of tips.

Police say they've looked into 1,500 so far. Unfortunately, that BMW is incredibly common.  In fact, there are roughly 30,000 registered BMWs in Arizona.

Sgt. Jon Howard with the Phoenix Police Department says he hopes the tips continue to flood in.

"We have resources in place to check on any tip and we want to continue to encourage those," Howard said.

While police love getting tips, they want the public to go a step further. If you see a vehicle that fits the description, you should send in the license plate number. Detectives can then quickly run a search.

The killer is known to use other vehicles including what is described as a white Cadillac.

Police have linked the murder to the Valley serial killer, who is blamed for nine shootings and seven deaths from mid-March until mid-July.
