"notMYkid" Kicks Off Annual Back-to-School Campaign. Would You Know if Drugs Were Lurking in Your Teens Room?
With each new school year, kids are faced with many challenges, but nothing more serious than peer pressure to use drugs. Often times, a simple "no" isn't enough to deflect peer pressure, that's why notMYkid, a national non-profit organization, is kicking off their Annual Back to School Substance Abuse Prevention Campaign on Thursday, Aug. 11 at their offices in Scottsdale, with their new interactive teen room, sponsored by A Second Look Consignment Superstore, that will feature several areas that girls and boys could be hiding their drugs. The exhibit will show outlets, key fabs, soda cans, lipstick containers and highlighters that could be used to conceal drugs.
The campaign begins in Phoenix on August 11 and will span 10 cities across the United States, giving away more than 3,000 free home drug test kits. Longtime partner, First Check Diagnostics, the leader in home diagnostic testing, has generously donated all of the kits for this year's campaign. Each kit is valued at $40 and comes with substance abuse prevention strategies and a family drug prevention plan.
Here in Phoenix, parents may visit the notMYkid offices anytime from Aug. 11-31 to pick up their free drug test kit. They can also drop by the offices and tour the mock teen room that will be set up all month to help educate parents and teens about the hidden dangers that could be lurking in their homes.
"First Check Diagnostics has been a proud national sponsor of notMYkid for 12 years," said Stacy Morano, marketing manager of First Check. "So many parents think their kids will never try drugs, but statistics show otherwise. Our home test kits are a proven deterrent and easy way for parents to start the conversation with their kids. We hope the Back to School campaign discourages kids from trying illegal drugs."
When parents choose to drug test their kids it accomplishes several important goals:
1) Opens a dialogue between parents and kids to discuss the risks of drug use
2) Helps kids avoid peer pressure situations by empowering them to say 'No, I can't, my parents drug test me"
3) Alerts the parent if a child has recently used drugs so they can decide how to respond
notMYkid is coordinating local events and distribution efforts with local public safety agencies, schools and other organizations in more than a dozen communities across the U.S. For a list of cities, partners and local events visit www.notMYkid.org/backtoschool.
They are also planning a community event on Sept. 30 at the notMykid offices from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Parents and teens are invited to attend and participate in the break-out sessions and discussions about the impact of substance abuse and create a family prevention plan. "Happy Birthday Julia Child" Menu at Christopher's and Crush Lounge
Expect a feast for all senses when one of the Valley's most venerable restaurateurs honors one of the most recognizable visionaries in food and pop culture.
From Monday, Aug., 15 - Saturday, Aug. 20, Christopher's Restaurant & Crush Lounge Executive Chef and Owner Christopher Gross will prepare a three-course dining menu in honor of the Aug. 15 birthday of late esteemed chef, author and television personality Julia Child, whom he worked alongside years ago on her groundbreaking PBS television series as an up-and-coming chef.
Inspired by the woman credited with bringing French cuisine into the American mainstream and uttering unforgettable lines such as, "If you're afraid of butter, use cream," Chef Gross's special multi-course menu is a nod to the French classics the pair prepared together and is appropriately heavy on rich stocks and sauces, regional specialties and both traditional and avant-garde French flavor combinations.
Expect starters like Duck Liver Terrine and Tart of Escargot, followed by entrees including Lobster Roe Basted White Fish, Coq au Vin and Beef Bourguignon. The themed menu closes with the likes of Christopher's iconic Chocolate Mousse Tower or Profiteroles au Chocolat.

56% of Americans Lose Sleep Over Retirement
Three questions that keep people awake thinking about retirement
1. I'm currently saving but how do I know how much money I'll need to retire?
- 61% of active savers lose sleep over retirement.
- Retirement isn't an age, it's a financial number.
- Think about what your retirement dreams are: do you want to travel, spend time kids, start a new business?
- Use the R:IQ free tool to help you determine how much to save monthly.
2. I'm worried I'll outlive my money during retirement. How can I make sure that doesn't happen?
- You have to budget during retirement. Don't think it's a free pass to spend.
- Sit down with a trusted professional and look at all your retirement income and expenses so you know what you have.
3. How can I find the extra money to save?
- Those who aren't saving say kids' activities and schooling are their top obstacles.
- Parents need to shift their priorities and put saving for retirement at the top.
- Get out of debt and cut down lifestyle expenses to free up income.
Ramsey Solutions is releasing the third report in a four-part series evaluating the state of retirement in America next week. The new research shows that 56% of Americans lose sleep thinking about retirement, and anxiety is the top emotion they associate with their golden years.
