MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

"You got to be evil to do this," West Valley resident Dewayne Ellis said Tuesday, less than two weeks after three members of his family were ambushed while sitting in a car outside the family's Maryvale home.

Ellis' 33-year-old sister, Stefani, was critically wounded. Her 12-year-old daughter, Maleah -- Ellis' niece -- was killed, as was Stefanie's partner, Angela Linner, 31.

The three were in a car parked in the driveway of the family's house at about 3 a.m. on Sunday, June 12. Early on, the incident was described as a drive-by shooting.

"It wasn't no drive-by," Ellis said. "They walked up to that car, and they shot -- they executed -- for whatever reason."

"That's my baby, and that's my sister," he continued as tears welled up his eyes. "My little niece didn't do nothing to nobody; my sister didn't do nothing to nobody."

"Witnesses reported seeing a male leaving the area in a light-colored (sic) vehicle immediately after the shots were fired," Sgt. Jonathan Howard of the Phoenix Police Department said just hours after the triple shooting. Neighbors said they heard as many as nine gunshots.

The June 12 shooting in front of the Ellis home is just the latest in a series of similar shootings in the Maryvale neighborhood.

Detectives have connected three other cases to this one.
