PEORIA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

There's a new business in Peoria called Modern Round, where the food is hot, the beer is cold and the replica firearms are the main attraction.

Whether a pistol or AR-15 strikes your fancy, teens and adults alike can see what it's like to shoot, and even train like a police officer, without ever having to step on a shooting range.

"One of the great things about Arizona is that it's very gun-friendly," Bill Scheidhauer, the company president, said. "You don't have people that have a big resistance to people owning guns."

Scheidhauer said they're working with local shooting simulator VirTra. These guns shoot lasers, not bullets, but the situations seem very real.

"We've designed some of our content for entry-level people that have never touched a gun before," Scheidhauer said. "Then we also have much more complex programs where you get into shoot-don't-shoot scenarios."

You don't have to leave the kids at home, either; teenagers from 12 to 17 year old are welcome, so long as they get a 20-minute safety lesson.

"Basically, to teach them the respect they need to make sure this could, in a live fire situation, be a real weapon," Scheidhauer said.

We talked to a victim of gun violence, who now advocates for responsible gun ownership. She said this is no different from video games already on the market, so long as it's advertised as entertainment, and not as training people to shoot.

"We're giving them the opportunity to go in, feel comfortable about what's going on, so if they do choose to own one, they have a comfort level with it instead of letting it sit on the shelf and being intimidated by it," Scheidhauer said.

Modern Round opens officially Friday at 8320 W. Mariners Way. The company hopes to expand to 15 to 20 locations across the country in the next five years.
