Tuesday's incident started as a domestic dispute between Wright and his wife, Nasbah Laverne Wright,at their Mesa home.
According to the police report, Nasbah called 911 around 3 a.m. and told police her husband was trying to leave in her vehicle and she was going to get in to prevent him from taking it.
The line was then disconnected.
A short time later, a caller on a cell phone contacted the police again and said “help me, help me,” according to the police report. The report goes on to say that the female caller said to police: “He has a rifle in the car and he’s going to shoot me!”
The woman could be heard yelling at someone to stop as numerous gunshots rang out. The female caller then went quiet as the shots continued to be heard.
When officers arrived at the Loop 202 and McKellips, they saw a male, later identified as Christopher Glen Wright, walking from the passenger area of a white pickup truck white with front end damage.
Police found Wright's wife dead on the road next to the passenger door of the pickup truck. She had died from apparent gunshot wounds.
Police say Ornelas was located on the road next to the driver's door of the pickup truck. He also had apparent gunshot wounds. The male was transported to Scottsdale-Osborn hospital, where he later died.
According to the police report, Wright admitted to shooting both his wife and Ornelas, stating "his wife was a cheating [expletive.]" When asked why he did not shoot at the police officer, Wright stated that "he did not have a beef with him."
20 expended shell casings were found at the scene.
Following the shootings, Wright reportedly surrendered without incident to police, lying down on the ground in a prone position.
But according to the police report, Wright later tried to escape and had to be tased and sprayed with pepper spray.
The police report states: "It was discovered Christopher had slipped his handcuffs from behind his back to the front of his body during transport. Christopher had been aggressive, kicking at the door and windows, but had complied with initial commands to stop. Christopher was told his cuffs needed to be put back to the rear to which he complied. Then as he was being escorted toward the building,Christopher dropped his center of gravity and began twisting to break the officer's control. Christopher had to be tased and pepper sprayed in an effort to regain control from his attempt to escape from the officers."
In a second police interview later, Wright detailed a history of domestic problems in his marriage. The police report reads: "Christopher stated he and his wife have been having domestic problems for years. He described himself as being both verbally and physically abusive against her on a regular basis in the past. He stated he had wanted to kill her on one previous occasion. However; she fled their residence. When he went in search for something to use, Christopher stated he had been using cocaine for the past week and had limited sleep."
According to the police report, Wright says he tried to leave their Mesa home at 3 a.m. because he reportedly "wanted to meet with their divorce lawyer."
The report continues: "His wife refused to let him take her car... and they decided to take a drive instead. While in the vehicle, Christopher again became upset with his wife, who had placed a call to 911. He said he hit her and the phone while she was making the call. He then began to accelerate to speeds over 100 miles per hour as he exited the 202 freeway at McKellips Road in Mesa, in an attempt to crash the vehicle and kill his wife. The vehicle hit a curb, became disabled and Christopher's wife exited the passenger door and ran to the passenger door of the truck. Christopher said he grabbed his loaded rifle and intentionally shot the male driver and then his wife."
The police report details what Wright told police he did next. The report reads that Wright: "Pulled both bodies out of the truck and entered the driver's seat, where he attempted to put the vehicle in gear in an effort to flee from the scene. He exited the vehicle and was about to flee on foot when the first officer arrived."
According to the police report, Wright stated on numerous occasions that "both his wife and the Mexican male, who he did not know, deserved to die and he would do it all again."
The police report lists Wright as an alcoholic and an addict, and says that he made statements that he "would kill anyone that got in his way."
Wright is due back in court June 7.
