MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Sunshine, blue skies, and warm temperatures year round, it's why we live in Arizona. But all that time outside can put your skin and health at risk.

"When it gets to be over 100 (degrees), I’m usually wearing a hat, sometimes long sleeves, depending on how hot it is and of course SPF 50 or greater, waterproof, of course, because of all the sweat," said hiker Katherine Royster.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Arizona ranks as one of the top states for skin cancer deaths.

"UV rays are the sun rays that actually cause damage to your skin," said Alchemi Sun Hats CEO Andy Birutis.

Scottsdale startup Alchemi Sun Hats is taking sun protection out of this world.

"We are using the same technology that is in the creation of space suits and space crafts to help protect astronauts," said Birutis.

It's called radiant barrier technology. They take the hard silver material, break it down, and laminate it to a soft, thin, polyester fabric to create a flexible, breathable, light-weight material.

"Alchemi Sun Hats can reflect up to 80 percent of the sun’s heat as well as block out 99.8 percent of skin damaging UV rays and tested SPF of well over 800," said Birutis.

"I think that would be valuable as long as it looks good," said hiker Mark Brady.

The company only has the river hat and the desert hat but is currently making a golf hat and a runner's hat that will be available this July. But they aren't stopping there.

"We are also looking at different types of apparel shirts, vests, and accessory products as well like sun umbrellas and sun canopies," said Birutis.
