Make a Splash

Olympic Gold Medal Swimmer Missy Franklin and the Make a Splash tour is making a positive impact, and trying to teach kids the importance of learning to swim. According to Make a Splash, the formal swimming lessons they offer has proven to reduce the risk of drowning among kids.

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death of children in the United States, with mortality rates surpassing those of traffic accident fatalities in recent years. Even more startling, approximately 10 people drown every day in the U.S but change is in the water.

Since 2007, USA Swimming Foundation's "Make a Splash" initiative has given more than 3 million children the lifesaving gift of free or low-cost swim lessons. Through the dedication of USA Swimming Foundation's 700 local partners and Phillips 66, Make a Splash works to reduce childhood drowning by visiting cities across America spreading the empowering message of learn-to-swim, primarily in underserved and inner-city populations.

Missy Franklin, a four-time Olympic Gold Medalist and world record holder is one of the spokespersons for the campaign. Although her mother was afraid of the water, Missy was enrolled in swim lessons at a young age and it changed her life. Missy knows from first-hand experience the value of learning to swim and how it saves lives.

Why Support Make a Splash?
Childhood drowning is preventable and is a risk to children of all ethnic backgrounds:

  •    Swimming lessons can reduce the likelihood of accidental childhood drowning by 88%
  •    70% of African American children cannot swim
  •    60% of Latino children cannot swim
  •    40% of Caucasian children cannot swim

The formal swimming lessons offered through the Make a Splash tour has proven to reduce the risk of drowning among kids.
